Research on the Optimal Riding Strategy Based on Keller Model

Cycling road racing is a popular sport for people all over the world. Different types of cycling road races require different abilities from the riders. Flexible riding strategies also play an important role in these races. In this paper, we simulate and analyze the riding process of time trials through modeling. By studying different riders, they are classified into four types and different riding strategies are proposed. In addition, in order to better simulate the environment of a given race, relevant data were searched and pictures of the course were drawn, the running model established by T.B. Keller was referred to, which was modified according to the cycling race, and the whole race process was divided into three parts. To calculate the minimum time, a nonlinear programming model was built based on Keller’s model. The model was also revised by considering the potential effects of weather. Since physical condition varies from person to person, four indicators (sprinting ability, endurance, climbing ability, and explosive power) were used to evaluate riders and classify them into four categories. Then, their strengths and weaknesses are described and the best strategy is proposed for any type of riders.
