Smartphone Sensor-Based Road Health Monitoring and Classification for Rural Roads: A Case Study of Punjab and Haryana States in India

Road health supervision is an emerging area of research in the transportation system to make sure a secure and smoother flow of traffic. These supervision techniques help to find road types like smooth roads, rough roads, potholes, etc. Many times, a pothole is the cause of the accident and that led to human resource losses. Road conditions also hurt our vehicle’s lifetime span. Many remarkable works have been done in road health supervision to perform road classification using machine learning techniques and sensory data. In this paper, we have proposed a road health monitoring system using smartphone sensors to collect data from rural regions of the Indian states of Punjab and Haryana. We apply different machine-learning techniques on collected sensor data to classify the types of roads. We also compare the rural road conditions of two Indian states. This analysis is very helpful for budget allocation according to the rural road condition of states.
