Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) Imaging Using a Dual-Radially-Polarized Antenna

In this study, we illustrate the utility of a dual-radially-polarized antenna for synthetic aperture radar (SAR) polarimetry measurements, particularly for nondestructive testing (NDT) applications. The use of this antenna allows SAR polarimetry to be performed using a single cross-polarization configuration, and at the same time allows for the detection of arbitrarily oriented targets and the evaluation of relative target orientation. The imaging procedure is described, and the post-processing steps required to characterize target orientation are shown. Results from imaging experiments using this antenna are provided, demonstrating the capability of this technique for detecting and characterizing polarizing targets in the presence of significant background clutter.
