Control Strategy of Flywheel Energy Storage Machine-Side Converter based on Three Vector Model Predictive Torque Control

The use of Flywheel Energy Storage Systems (FESS) has become increasingly popular, prompting extensive research into its control technology. In the regard, a research focus has emerged on the application of the three-vector model predictive torque control (MPTC) and the development of a power and torque double closed-loop control strategy for FESS. The output power response speed and steady-state power pulsation of FESS under power regulation control are aimed to be improved by utilizing a control structure based on direct power closed-loop control, instead of the traditional speed regulation control. Additionally, the conventional direct torque control (DTC) is also replaced with the three-vector model predictive torque control (TV-MPTC). To enhance the stability of the control system and reduce processor calculation time, a selection table for suboptimal voltage vector selection is introduced in the machine-side converter of FESS. Simulation results are presented for the two primary operating conditions of FESS, which demonstrate the favorable steady-state performance and transient performance of the proposed power control strategy.
