A Pilot Protection for Transmission Lines Connected to Wind Power Plants

Due to the influence of the complex control, the short circuit current provided by wind power generation units exhibits new characteristics, such as controlled amplitude and phase and weak feedback characteristics, affecting the performance of traditional protections. This paper proposes a novel pilot protection using the compensated voltage on both sides. The proposed method has a strong anti-fault resistance ability and has no need for data synchronization. The test results indicate that the proposed method can distinguish the internal faults and external fault reliably, unaffected by the new characteristics of short circuit current.
