Back-Stepping Based Flux Orientation Control of a Five-Phase Induction Motor

Five-phase induction motors are considered an alternative and effective solution for industrial applications with high electric power, as they are beginning to replace three-phase motors. Both types are similar in terms of working principle and control methods. The flux-oriented control (FOC) methodology is commonly used to separate torque control from flux control. As the main objective of this methodology is to maintain a constant value flux in the electrical machine. Based on this concept, this paper presents a back-stepping control methodology based on FOC for driving a five-phase induction motor. The control system includes two regulating loops. In the outer loop, speed, and flux components are regulated. Then, the reference values of the currents in (abcde) frame are calculated by Park transform. The currents in the inner loop are regulated using hysteresis regulators to obtain the pulses to be applied to the voltage inverter. The simulation results in MATLAB \ Simulink show the effectiveness of the proposed methodology compared to the PI controllers-based FOC system, as it has high dynamic performance and fast response, and maintains flux at the nominal value despite the change in the rotor resistance value, while it was observed that the flux increased by 8% When using a FOC system based on PI controllers
