Monitoring of Operational Parameters of Optical Telecommunication Systems' Physical Channels

This work emphasizes the relevance and main tasks of monitoring operational parameters of physical channels of optical telecommunication systems. Here we state the main technical requirements for automated monitoring systems and analyze the monitoring techniques based on Rayleigh and Mandelstam-Brillouin scattering principles. The further enables to determine the coordination and the nature of damage using a reflectogram. It is applicable for both active and passive optical fibers. The latter makes it possible to detect and promptly eliminate the problems arising in the fiber-optic communication line at an early stage. Moreover, this monitoring method is very informative for optical access networks. The monitoring systems based on coherent reception are of particular value. Also, we obtained an estimate of the quantum-mechanical limit of the sensitivity of a coherent optical receiver. In conclusion, the urgency of creating a system of metrological support for monitoring systems is substantiated.
