Nano- Particles Detection in Subatomic Texture Images

Images can be easily acquired in today's world. Information can be extracted from these images using techniques grouped under the name “Image Segmentation.” Image segmentation relies heavily on the use of Morphological Operators to locate and extract features within an image. These features can range from a large object moving through the sky to a micron sized particle within a material. Nickel based Superalloys develop particles called gamma and gamma prime upon cooling. Researchers are interested in the location, size, and shape of these particles. Traditional methods using Morphological Operators to isolate and extract the particles has shown mixed results. This paper presents a novel method to automatically locate and extract the particles, using a combination of Morphological Operators, region growing algorithms, and user input.
