An eGaN HEMT-Based High Power Density Controller for Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor

Permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) is widely used in the field of more-electric aircraft due to its high power density, efficiency, and reliability, while, the Si-based controller is limited to the switching frequency in the high-speed application. Thus, a GaN HEMT-based controller is proposed for high-performance of PMSM driving system, with the properties of high switching frequency, small size, and low switching loss. The characteristics of GaN-based power devices are analyzed in detail, and driving and buffer circuits are designed to suppress device oscillation and bridge arm crosstalk. To implement a dual-loop control strategy for speed and current, the platform based on DSP and FPGA is implemented to verify the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed eGaN HEMT-based PMSM controller with the switching frequency of 200 kHz.
