Nanophononics: from nm- thick Membranes to Circuit Components*

Phonons in the sub-micro- and nano-metre scales exhibit dramatic changes in their dispersion relations allowing for phonon engineering. Starting with phonons in nm-thick membranes progressing to phononic crystals, it is shown that phononic circuits become a reality with components such as sources and waveguides.
