Development of multi-energy photon counting detector for X-ray imaging

Photon counting detector makes up for some shortcomings of traditional energy integral detector. It shows more abundant X-ray attenuation characteristics, and has been shown to improve the overall image quality for a given X-ray dose. In this paper, a multi-energy photon counting detector based on CdTe sensor was developed. The detector was composed of 8 modules, and every module consisted of 2x2 readout ASICs bump bonded to a 21.75x31.35cm
²
sensor. The readout chip was composed of 72x104 readout channels with the pixel size of 150x150μm
²
. The backend readout electronics of the detector was designed to deal with 12.1024Gbps data rate out of the modules. The performances of the detector readout electronics were preliminarily evaluated. The results indicated that the system can implement four thresholds.
