Analyses on Protective Honeycomb for High-Pressure Vessel Under Low-Speed Compression Based on Equivalent Method

In this paper, the Double Arrowhead Wing Honeycomb (DAWH) combining double arrowhead with re-entrant honeycomb was proposed. According to the protection requirement, roller Arrowhead wing honeycomb (RAWH) with typical three densities in equivalent method was constructed based on cells of DA WH. The mechanical and energy absorption characteristics, deformation mode, stress of nodes, dynamic response, and structural efficiency of roller honeycomb under low-speed compression were investigated by finite element analysis and experimental test. Compared with the Roller Hexagonal Honeycomb (RHH) and Roller Re-entrant Honeycomb (RRH), the RAWH possessed negative Poisson's Ratio (NPR) enhancement under compression and occupied greater stiffness, structural stability, energy absorption, and structural efficiency. Two deformation modes, enhanced mode and support mode, could enable the RAWHs to exhibit different performances. Under the low-speed compression of 8mm displacement, the peak contact force of RAWH in the elastic platform exceeded 15000 N. The peak contact forces of RAWH were about 3.05 times and 2.21 times those of RHH and RRH, respectively. Under the 8000 N contact force, the contact area of RAWH in compression deformation was about 3.5, 1.83, and 1.98 times that of the unprotected vessels, RHH and RRH. Protective honeycomb for high-pressure vessels could greatly reduce the collision damage.
