English-Manipuri Cross-Lingual Embedding: A Preliminary Study

This work presents a preliminary study of cross-lingual embedding between English and Ma-nipuri, a Tibeto-Burman language and a low-resource language. Initially, the work focuses on understanding the quality of cross-lingual embedding by evaluating the bilingual dictionary induction task on various su-pervised, weakly supervised, and unsupervised state-of-the-art methods. Experimental result shows poor performance in all the state-of-the-art techniques in English-Manipuri cross-lingual embedding. The work then moves on to understanding the impact of linguistic features, such as the morphologically rich nature of the Manipuri language, on the performance of the Bilingual Dictionary Induction(BDI) task.
