Yogyakarta Electricity System Expansion Planning Considering Renewable Energy and CO2 Emission Reduction

Yogyakarta Province lacks fossil fuel and natural gas resources. Consequently, it relies on the supply of Java-Madura-Bali electrical system to meet its electricity needs. However, this system is dominated by fossil and gas power plants which produce CO
2
emissions. One of the solutions to reduce CO
2
emissions is by utilizing renewable energy. In this paper, electrical system planning used two scenarios, namely the Business as Usual and renewable energy with energy storage scenario. Contribution of renewable energy power plants has been analyzed based on two aspects, namely electricity production and reduction of CO
2
emissions. Model was simulated with Low Emissions Analysis Platform software and optimization was solved with Next Energy Modelling System for Optimization. During the planning period the renewable energy scenario contribution of generated electricity by 92% and the import of electricity from Java-Madura-Bali system by 8%. From 2033 to 2036 renewable energy scenario will be capable of supplying the electricity system by 100% without any imports from grid. The renewable energy scenario can reduce emissions by 84 % from the Business as Usual scenario. Cost-Benefit analysis shows that the renewable energy scenario can produce Net Present Value cost of 2.3 billion USD less than the Business as Usual scenario.
