Non-Linear Modelling of Switched Reluctance Motor and its Drive for EV Applications

Switched Reluctance Motor (SRM) has emerged as a promising choice for variable speed drive applications in Electric Vehicles (EVs), due to its simplicity in construction, ruggedness, high-speed operation, lower cost in manufacturing, and high efficiency. However, it requires a dedicated power converter, and due to higher torque ripple that causes noise is its major limitation. Modelling of SRM requires knowledge of flux-linkage characteristics, since it has non-linear flux-linkage characteristics, a linear model may fail to give the desired results. This paper gives a brief knowledge of SRM construction and its working principles. An accurate model of SRM is developed using experimentally obtained flux-linkage characteristics. Control aspects of the motor are discussed and control parameters such as
$\mathrm{T}_{\text{ON}},\mathrm{T}_{\text{OFF}}$
, and
$\mathrm{I}_{\text{REF}}$
are obtained through extensive open simulations. Closed loop control is implemented using PID controller and Hysteresis current control for low-speed operation and angle control for high -speed operation. Simulation results of speed, torque, current and voltage waveforms are presented.
