Integration of RIC and xApps for Open -Radio Access Network for Performance Optimization

The evolution of wireless communication networks has led to the emergence of Open Radio Access Network (O-RAN) as a promising paradigm for enhancing network flexibility, interoperability, and cost-effectiveness. O-RAN introduces the concept of the RAN Intelligent Controller (RIC) and its extended applications (xApps) to optimize the performance of radio access networks. This paper provides an in-depth overview of the RIC and xApps, their role in O-RAN architecture, and their contribution to performance optimization. In this paper the technical aspects of how RIC and xApps function together to bring dynamic control, efficient resource allocation, and intelligent decision-making to O-RAN deployments. Furthermore, the paper presents the xApps related to idle mode load balancing and carrier aggregation which demonstrate the practical benefits of integrating RIC and xApps into O-RAN networks.
