Study on the Operation Area of Converter Station Considering Fluctuation of Renewable Energy Generation

VSC-HVDC is widely used to transmit renewable energy. However, the fluctuation and uncertainty in the renewable energy generation (REG) can cause interference in VSC-HVDC system. The operation area of VSC station for renewable energy integration has more constraints compared to the VSC-HVDC system connected to an AC grid at the sending end. Firstly, this paper depicts the operation area of the converter connected to the AC grid. Next, the constraints of the converter are analyzed on the basis of considering the fluctuation of REG and the operation area of converter is depicted. Following that, a simplified model is built on PSCAD/EMTDC to validate the correctness of the calculation method for the final safe and stable operation area.
