Behaviorally Inspired Process Based Malware and its Impact on Detection

As of 2017, ransomware has [1] become a problem impacting nearly 100 countries worldwide. In 2021, studies estimated that ransomware damages exceeded ${\$}$265B [2]. Ransomware is an evolving international issue that will only increase its worldwide presence unless a combination of international law, technology, and cooperation is combined to prevent its proliferation. However, to this day, most malware detection is done by the proven signature-based detection method, which only identifies malware with known signature hashes.Since there is a large financial incentive for attackers to evolve malware to evade detection new approaches in detection are needed. The evolution of malware [3]–[5] is motivated by financial reward that forces adaptation to overcome detection. Detection technologies are evolving to use biological inspire detection techniques [4], [6]. We introduce biological inspired malware. Similarly to biological diseases such as cancers systemic failures occur when there is no longer the ability to differentiate between like and unlike cellular structures. We hope as the work continues we will find features that could be used in early detection of novel malware.
