On the Use of Open Air Interface and OpenBTS for Mobile Communications Education in Telecommunications Laboratories

Telecommunications engineering plays a fundamental role in supporting mobile networks that have undergone rapid evolution and technological improvements in recent decades, both in network components and their application in various vertical industries. Indeed, telecommunications engineers are responsible for designing, implementing, optimizing, and maintaining mobile network infrastructures to ensure their efficient and reliable operation. To ensure proper preparation of electronic and telecommunications engineering students, it is essential for them to acquire theoretical knowledge and practical experience in the operation and evaluation of mobile network components. In this regard, this article proposes the use of simulators and emulators as a more flexible and cost-effective alternative for the development of 2G, 4G, and 5G NSA mobile networks. Specifically, the use of open-source software such as OpenBTS and Open Air Interface is suggested, which allows for the implementation of mobile networks using software-defined radio (SDR) modules. Additionally, a list of laboratory experiences that can be conducted with the implemented systems is proposed.
