Electromagnetic Assessment of a Five-Phase YASA Machine for Automotive Traction

This work addresses the electromagnetic assessment of a five-phase yokeless and segmented armature (YASA) machine, specifically designed for automotive traction. First, general machine data are presented, including rated values and main dimensions. Additionally, the magnetic characteristics of the grain-oriented steel to be used in the armature core and of the magnets to be used in the machine are presented. Then, 3D finite element analyses are performed to determine the main machine parameters to be used in transient models, and induction maps are obtained to analyze the saturation levels achieved with different operating conditions. Finally, the efficiency map is obtained considering the maximum torque per ampere control strategy, which also validates the applicability of the machine in a wide range of operation in terms of torque and speed.
