Advancing Connectomics: High-Precision Neural Structure Segmentation Using U-Net-Based Model

Segmenting connectomics images is a crucial endeavor in neuroscience that provides remarkable insights into the complex neuronal architecture of the brain. In order to get beyond present restrictions, this research evaluates existing connectomics picture segmentation approaches critically and argues for the adoption of a U-Net-based strategy. We seek to increase the precision and effectiveness of connectomics picture segmentation by using a U-Net architecture with contracting and expanding routes. Our method involves iteratively updating the network parameters to minimise a loss function after training the network using a collection of connectomics pictures and associated ground truth segmentation masks. The main goal of this study is to create an automated U-Net-based segmentation model that can precisely identify brain structures in serial section TEM (ssTEM) pictures. By harnessing the dataset’s content, we seek to facilitate the creation of a robust and efficient model for precise neural structure segmentation that provides optimal loss of 0.043 (approx) at epoch 197. A Surface Dice score of 0.9231, used to evaluate segmentation accuracy, indicates a strong alignment between the predicted and ground truth surfaces in the ssTEM dataset during segmentation.
