Magnet Mapping At LANSCE

This paper will review the Los Alamos National Laboratory’s Magnet Mapping Laboratory located at LANSCE (Los Alamos Neutron Science Center). The Magnet Mapping Laboratory is used by multiple divisions across Los Alamos National Laboratory to quantitatively map the magnetic fields of different kinds of magnets (Dipole, Quadrapole, Sextupole, etc.). The magnetic fields are measured using two diagnostic methods. The first method is a point mapper which gathers data from 3 axes’ (x, y, z). A Hall probe is attached to one end which measures the magnetic field within a set of points along one axis at a time. The second method is a rotating coil that is used to gather the larger magnetic field of the magnet. A LabVIEW program is used to gather the data from both methods. Once the data has been gathered a series of equations is used to convert the raw data into a graph that shows the magnetic field at various points inside the magnet. Multiple mappings are done per magnet at different current and voltages to retrieve a precise understanding of the field. The current/voltage levels are monitored by a transducer which is shown within the LabVIEW codes UI. With the different specifications of magnets that come through multiple power supplies are available to account for lower to higher levels of current/voltages needed.
