A Low Cost High-Frequency Resonant DC-DC Converter for Renewable Energy Integration with Rural Microgrids

Renewable energy sources, particularly solar electricity, are becoming more viable solutions for electrifying rural areas due to their low cost and ability to overcome distance constraints. Resonant DC-DC converters are developing as appealing alternatives to traditional converters, providing high efficiency while minimizing switching losses and power density problems. This research suggests a concept that uses a solar PV array and an LLC resonant converter with MPPT to power a rural microgrid via an inverter. Modifying the LLC resonant converter design boosts the renewable energy system’s efficiency, control, flexibility, and adaptability. In addition, an auxiliary battery system is included to store extra energy to maintain a consistent power supply during periods of low solar irradiation. The experimental results have confirmed that the planned LLC resonant converter boasts an astounding efficiency rate of 98%. In addition, when compared to typical converters, the LLC converter is a more cost-effective solution. The integration of the LLC resonant DC-DC converter with the rural microgrid and the inclusion of an auxiliary battery in this study not only caters to the energy needs of remote communities but also supports the attainment of Sustainable Development Goal 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy) by offering dependable and sustainable energy solutions customized to meet specific needs.
