Digital Pulse Shaping for Nuclear Signals by Reconstructing the Output Current Pulse of the Detector

The digital pulse shaping methods based on convolution or
$Z$
transform depend on ideal output-signal models. However, for some detectors, the collection time of electrons is related to the incident position of the particle. In these detectors, the width and shape of the output current pulse often varies randomly. These output current pulses cannot be accurately described by ideal models. In this study, output signals of a semiconductor detector are analyzed. Without the support of ideal models, a digital pulse shaping method is established by reconstructing the output current pulse of the detector from the output voltage pulse of the detection system. Experimental results show that the new method achieves similar performance on energy resolution improvement compared with the trapezoidal pulse shaping method. However, the digital solution to the new method avoids recursive calculation. The new method is immune to ballistic deficit and baseline drift, and it provides a new way to obtain pulse amplitudes.
