Reactive Power Compensation based on Active Front-End Rectifiers

Reactive power compensation (RPC) involves the deliberate introduction of capacitive or inductive electrical loads into the grid to stabilize voltage, achieve the required cos(φ), and enhance the active power transmission capacity. This article presents the results of laboratory experiments on reactive power generation based on an active front-end rectifier (AFE). It demonstrates the measured instantaneous values of active and reactive power, voltage in the direct current (DC) link, and the AFE modulation index. It was recommended to fix the rated modulation index at RPC modes. The research in this area is promising as to the perspective results that there are high requirements to energy conservation, energy efficiency, and power quality.
