Indoor Quality Assessment of 4G/5G Mobile Service Providers in Muscat Governorate of Oman

The growing importance of high-quality internet connections to support emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things, has highlighted the need to assess the quality of service (QoS) for broadband networks. In Oman, there is a crucial need for measurements and studies to evaluate the mobile broadband performance of the country's mobile service providers. This pilot study was conducted to evaluate the QoS of 4G/5G mobile service providers in three locations: AI-Seeb, AI-Amarat, and Muscat. The study aimes to assess the user experience of mobile phone users by collecting measurement data from the three mobile network operators (MNOs) in Oman, namely Omantel, Ooredoo, and Vodafone. The data was collected using the G-Net Track Pro application installed on three identical Android smartphones. The experimental results show that for a 5G network, the maximum download speed in Muscat is approximately 122.7 Mbps, with a latency of 46 ms and an SNR of 16.7 dB. The findings of this study reveal that Ooredoo, Omantel, and Vodafone provide quality mobile broadband services to users in Oman, with varying degrees of performance levels. This study provides a baseline for future studies to monitor the performance of mobile broadband networks in Oman, which will be particularly useful for end-users, service providers, and policymakers. Furthermore, the experimental data can be used to improve network planning and optimization, ultimately leading to better end-user experiences.
