Benefit maximization of prosumer with grid-connected PV-BESS system using Social Group Optimization

Due to benefits like plenty of energy sources, pro-environmental perspective, and simple power extraction, photovoltaic (PV) integrated microgrids have been researched more and more. When a microgrid is linked with distributed energy resources (DERs), such as solar PV systems, there are several difficulties. The necessity for an effective energy management system (EMS) with a suitable pricing structure to benefit both the consumer and the distribution firm arises in order to address these issues. With the use of battery storage systems, the inherent drawbacks of PV, such as its unpredictability in providing electricity, can be lessened. The PV power characteristics are non-linear due to the fluctuating solar irradiation and temperature. In order to produce additional energy, a PV system that can track the maximum power point is required. In order to reduce the overall annual running cost while still functioning within the restrictions of the system, an Energy Management System (EMS) that includes grid-connected batteries with valve-regulated lead-acid energy storage systems and PV module is modelled. Real time load and solar irradiation data are considered. Social group optimization (SGO) is implemented to find out the optimal size of the energy storage system which will provide maximum cost-benefit. Time of use pricing structure is considered where the price changes depending on the load demand. The MATLAB simulation produced good performance results.
