Commutation Fault Identification of UHVDC Transmission System Based on Dissipated Energy

Commutation failure is a common fault in UHVDC transmission systems that use grid commutation converters. If commutation failure occurs, it will cause DC power fluctuations and perhaps a DC lockout, endangering the grid's ability to function safely and steadily. Therefore, it is critical to correctly and promptly diagnose the failure and implement the necessary controls to prevent commutation failure from happening in the later stage. This paper first uses MATLAB/SIMULINK to build the simulation model of UHVDC transmission system, and then the different types of faults on the inverter side commutation bus are simulated. To determine the faulty type of commutation failure, this paper proposes a commutation failure identification method of UHVDC transmission system based on dissipated energy, the outcomes demonstrate that this method is cable of correctly determine the commutation failure type brought on by a commutation bus fault.
