DFIG Grid Side Converter-Based Low-Frequency Electromechanical Oscillation Damping Controller

Today's grid codes require wind power plants (WPPs) to provide ancillary services such as power system oscillation damping. The large integration of WPPs displaces synchronous generators, thereby reducing system inertia and causing changes in power flows in the major tie lines, consequently decreasing the damping of low-frequency electromechanical oscillations (LFOs). In this paper, a power oscillation damping controller (POD) within a doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) grid side converter is designed to damp LFOs by modulating reactive power that the converter exchanges with the grid. Most of the published work in this field has implemented POD within rotor side converter to modulate either active or reactive power. The proposed POD is validated on a Two-area Four-Machine test system consisting of 100 MW DFIG-based WPP. A local feedback signal is selected as the input signal to the damping controller. Optimal POD parameters are obtained using the genetic algorithm optimization tool. The simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed controller in damping the oscillations.
