Simulation and Control of a Nine Phase Induction Machine with Pole-Phase Modulation used in Propulsion System for Electric Vehicles

In these days, the automotive industry is providing a proper environment to develop and try new solutions for the electric traction systems used in the electric vehicles (EVs). One of the ideas which arose in the last years relates to the usage of different electric machine designs for obtaining the optimal value when it comes to cost-performance criteria in a drive system. From this point of view, the attention was drawn by the multiphase induction machines (MIM) which promise to fulfil the already strict requirements of the traction motor but also to add additional value when it comes to reliability and efficiency. This paper provides a technical sight of a possible way of using a MIM in a vehicle system with detailed results in the direction of field-oriented control (FOC) modelled and tested with the help of MATLAB Simulink. A pole-phase modulation control was proposed in order to adjust dynamically the desired vehicle speed on different track conditions.
