Radar Characterization of a Broadband 77 GHz IQ Transceiver Chipset in 22 nm FDX CMOS

This paper introduces a millimeter-wave frontend chipset designed for a digitally modulated 77 GHz automotive radar, together with its comprehensive assessment. Comprising of a transmitter and receiver chip fabricated on a 22 nm FDX CMOS technology, the chipset operates using an LO input at a quarter of the carrier frequency. Both chips come with two RF channels, and their corresponding baseband IQ inputs/outputs, and operate at the frequency range of 76 GHz–81 GHz, featuring an instantaneous bandwidth of about 1 GHz. A maximum output power of 11.8 dBm was achieved. Furthermore, the presented integrated circuits are compared to existing broadband transceivers for radar applications in CMOS and SiGe technology. The functionality of the chipset is finally demonstrated in a single-transmitter, single-receiver OFDM radar measurement with static and dynamic targets.
