Experimental Validation of a Flywheel Energy Storage System for Smart Grid Research Lab

This paper presents an innovative flywheel energy storage system (FESS) incorporated with a mechanical speed conversion mechanism, with a particular focus on its applicability in smart grid research studies. The smart grid paradigm seeks to seamlessly integrate distributed energy resources (DERs) and renewable energy sources (RESs) to establish a resilient, efficient, and sustainable electricity supply network. Leveraging its inherent characteristics of high charge-discharge cycles and impressive power density, the FESS emerges as a viable solution for various power applications within this context. To ascertain the viability of the proposed system, a virtual model was developed and meticulously assessed to evaluate its feasibility before embarking on the physical implementation. The utilization of a direct-on-line starter effectively manages the start-up process and facilitates precise control over the electrical machine driving the flywheel. Moreover, the mechanical design parameters governing the flywheel and shaft were meticulously optimized to ensure the system’s operational integrity, mitigating any potential structural deformations. Ultimately, the proposed system was successfully implemented and rigorously tested under controlled laboratory conditions, solidifying its practicality, and validating its performance.
