Investigation of the UAV Electromagnetic Resistance with a Direct Lightning Discharge into the Fuselage

Paper proposes an approach to predicting the electromagnetic resistance of the on-board systems of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) under direct exposure to a lightning discharge in the forward fuselage. The approach is based on the study of the electromagnetic environment in the internal space of the fuselage and electromagnetic interference in the interface communication lines. To assess the electromagnetic resistance of on-board systems, the levels of electromagnetic interference and the strength of the electromagnetic field are compared to the requirements of regulatory documents. A practical example of predicting the lightning resistance of a UAV made of a carbon-fiber composite material is considered based on a study of the electromagnetic environment and electromagnetic interference in the interface communication lines of the UAV on-board systems. The levels of electromagnetic interference in the interface communication lines and the strength of the electromagnetic field in the intrafuselage space can lead to disruption of the on-board systems. Basic approaches to ensuring lightning resistance of UAVs are proposed.
