Enhancing the Safety of LPG Storage Through the Implementation of Safety Instrumented Systems with IoT Technology

The safe storage of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) is a major concern due to its flammable and explosive nature. The objective of this research is to enhance the safety of LPG storage through the implementation of Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) with IoT technology. The study was carried out at the Indian Oil Corporation Limited LPG bottling plant in Ernakulum, India. A comprehensive safety system was designed and implemented that included various sensors such as area level indicators, gas monitoring systems, remote operating valves, and temperature gauges. The sensors were integrated with the IoT network, allowing for real-time monitoring and control of the LPG storage process. The results showed that the sensors accurately detected the process level, providing a high level of safety and security for the storage and handling of LPG. In addition to real-time monitoring, the system also provided remote access to the LPG storage process, enabling plant operators to monitor and control the process from a remote location. This increased the level of operational efficiency and reduced the risk of human error, thereby improving overall safety and security. The system was also equipped with advanced alarms and shutdown features that automatically trigger in case of any emergency situations, providing an additional layer of safety. The implementation of the SIS with IoT technology significantly improved the safety and security of the LPG storage process at the Indian Oil Corporation Limited LPG bottling plant in Ernakulum. The system accurately detected and monitored the process level, providing real-time data and control, and enabling the plant operators to respond quickly to any potential safety issues. The results of this study demonstrate the potential of SIS with IoT technology to improve the safety and security of LPG storage and handling processes, and it is recommended that this technology be implemented in other LPG storage facilities.
