Power and Area Aware Bump Physically Unclonable Function

In design of integrated circuits, process variations are a serious problem. This has been used to develop a novel hardware security primitive or digital fingerprint generator, called a Bump Physical Unclonable Function (BPUF), for resource-constrained low-power applications. The proposed architecture uses only five transistors as PUF cell, and minimum peripheral circuitry, making it compact and suited for resource-constrained applications. The simulation results reveal that the proposed design uses 35.71fJ/bit of energy, and has 0.0045µm
²
of area per bit, and has near equal probability of 1s and 0s, with a uniformity of 61.06%. The median, as determined by the inter Hamming Distance (HD) plot, is 48.33%, which is very close to the golden mean of 50%. This demonstrates that the suggested PUF can reliably produce single-use tokens.
