High Efficient High Power Factor Single phase LED Driver with Constant Output Current without Electrolytic Capacitor*

In this paper, an LED driver based on a two-port design is discussed. Minimal power processing (MPP) can be achieved by controlling the flow of power, thus reducing the dependence on storage capacitance and improving the lifespan of the driver. Unlike cascaded LED drivers, the DC-DC converter only needs to handle a part of the input power in this design. This will improve the driver’s overall efficiency. By adjusting the input-side filter, the ripple power is reduced on the AC side. With this design, the electrolytic capacitor can be removed, increasing the lifespan of the driver. A 30 W PSIM simulation model is built, and results are verified. The results demonstrated that the proposed driver achieved a power factor of 0.99 with low input current harmonics and a peak efficiency of 97% at full power with peak-to-peak output current ripple of 3.03%.
