Antenna Array Design for Intelligent Reflecting Surface

5G explores the feasibility of wireless communication in the mm-wave domain. However, mm-wave communication suffers from a high absorption under environmental conditions. In this context, Intelligent Reflecting Surface (IRS) can play a significant role. Further, IRS can be a noteworthy solution in the case of NLOS communication. IRS consists of a passive reflector backed antenna array, known as the reflect array, that can direct the incident radio wave in the desired direction. In the current work, the significance of an IRS is presented in the realm of 5G and beyond. Further, the main features and advantages of IRS are highlighted and supported by an extensive and state-of-the-art literature survey. In the current work, a novel design of reflector backed rectangular array is proposed and evaluated in the sub 6 GHz band. The proposed reflect array is illuminated using electromagnetic wave. The magnitude and phase of the reflected wave with respect to the direction of incidence is plotted for a fixed position of the receiver antenna.
