An Asymmetric Millimeter Wave MIMO Antenna Array for 5G Applications

An asymmetric millimeter wave MIMO antenna array is proposed in this paper for the 5G applications. Four microstrip grid array antennas are working as transmitting antennas and one differential-fed patch antenna serves as receiving antenna. The numbers of the transmitting antennas and the receiving antennas are asymmetric, which is different from the conventional reciprocal MIMO systems. Based on weak-field self-decoupling technology, a simulated isolation of 35.8 dB is achieved at 28 GHz. The simulated input impedance bandwidths are 3.9 GHz and 1.9 GHz for the transmitting antennas and the receiving antenna, respectively. The simulated maximal peak realized gains are 18.8 dBi and 8.8 dBi for the transmitting antennas and the receiving antenna, respectively.
