A Review of Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface Assisted Backscatter Communication Systems

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) technology has a broad application in 6G networks owing to its superior capability of intelligently reconfiguring wireless communication environment. As a typical technology of low power technology, backscatter communication technology can be applied to ultra-low power communication and low-cost Internet of Things devices. This paper summarizes the RIS technology and backscatter communication technology and analyzes its research significance; from the aspect of performance analysis, channel estimation, beamforming and resource allocation, we introduce the research status and development of backscatter communication and RIS technology. Based on the existing research progress, the RIS assisted backscatter communication system is discussed, and future development direction is prospected.
