Demonstration of Rapid Indoor Mapping Using a Very High Resolution Radar at J-Band

A fast J-band FMCW radar system is modified with a fast scanning elliptic toroidal reflector for high resolution mapping and navigation. The system operates in the 222–228 GHz frequency band and is capable of generating FMCW chirps with a rate of 28
$\text{MHz}/\mu \mathrm{s}$
. The block diagram and component description of IF and RF modules is presented. The radar uses a 3D printed reflector antenna to mechanically scan the surrounding with a
$0.3^{\circ}$
azimuthal resolution. Combined with 15 cm range resolution, the system is used to generate a 2D images with 15 cm pixel size at 30 m distance. The radar is then used to investigate indoor imaging and mapping capabilities. The approach used in the experiment produced images that identify main building features such as doors, windows and wall corners. For target detection, the CFAR algorithm is applied and the multipath backscatterr is eliminated by considering only the first detection at each angle, removing most of the ghost targets in the radar image.
