Novel Radio Frequency (RF) Based Wireless Gas Sensing Using Polypyrrole (PPy) Smart Films

This paper presents the design and analysis of a novel hexagonal resonator for radio frequency (RF) based wireless gas sensing. The proposed resonator is designed and simulated using CST Microwave Studio and operates in the Ultra-Wide Band (UWB) frequency range. A thin film of Polypyrrole (PPy) is incorporated on the resonator surface which acts as a smart sensing material to detect the presence of nitogen dioxide (NO
2
). The response of the proposed resonator with and without the smart material is analyzed. This work reports the novel use of PPy thin films for NO
2
detection in RF domain.
