An Uninterruptible Standalone Wind-based Direct Current Microgrid for Remote Locations

Electricity may now become the basic and essential need for day-to-day life. Revolutionary advancement in existing grid led to the development in smart grids, Microgrids and nanogrids etc. Still millions of people cannot access the electricity network of required capacity due to geographical conditions and transmission challenges. For such situations, a wind energy conversion system (WECS) based direct current (DC) microgrid has been proposed in this paper. A wind turbine and an energy storage system (ESS) have been connected in the proposed microgrid to provide an uninterruptible power supply to remote populations. To ensure its feasibility and practicality, the proposed study has been tested hardware-in loop (HIL) environment. Test results show that the proposed system can deliver an efficient and uninterruptible power supply to the loads irrespective of intermittency in the wind speed.
