Multiresonant Chiral Metamaterial Based on Single-Turn Wavy Ribbon Metal Helices

The paper is devoted to the formation and study of double-layer chiral metamaterial structures in the microwave range, consisting of single-turn three-dimensional helices. The developed unique design based on two types of helices is implemented using 3D printing and metal shadow deposition. The task of forming a continuous gapless array of conducting single-turn wavy ribbon helices was solved. Numerical simulation methods have been used to establish mechanisms for enhancing the rotation of the plane of polarization in a wide microwave range due to the excitation of multiple resonances. The impact of half-wavelength as well as antisymmetric resonances, which lead to broadening of the frequency band with an enhanced cross-polarized component of the transmitted wave, is considered. The influence of the substrate properties on the electromagnetic performance of the metamaterial has been studied. Rotation of the polarization plane at the frequency of 36.7 GHz up to 20 degrees has been experimentally demonstrated.
