Throughput Optimization for Mobile Nodes With Wireless Energy Harvesting in Cellular Networks

This paper mainly focuses on the throughput optimization for the mobile nodes in wireless cellular networks in which the mobile nodes are with the wireless energy harvest capability. The paper mainly considers the following problem: In the case of having requirement on the maximum of data transmission delay, how to design its optimal transmission policy and allocate its power resource for mobile users? To do so, this paper considers the case of with maximum delay requirement of data transmission. The optimal transmission policy is to minimize the packet loss probability while satisfying the basic transmission data rate requirement of users. The paper first characterizes the system model by using Constrained Markov Decision Process (CMDP) and formulates the optimal problem by maximizing the average network throughput. This paper also presents the analytical results and the corresponding simulation results. These results clearly show the effects of the maximum energy storage capacity and the maximum time delays on the user's service in terms of throughput and loss probability. Simulation results indicate the advantage of the proposed optimal policy over the conventional policies. The study finds that increasing the battery power storage capacity and/or increasing the maximum delay time slots will increase the real achieved throughput and reduce the packet loss probability under certain conditions. In addition, the study also finds a threshold phenomenon: if the minimum throughput demand is larger than a value, its real achieved throughput and the packet loss probability will not change again as the maximum delay time and the battery capacity are large enough. These results provide more insights on the system design for wireless power energy harvesting communication systems.
