Ultra Wideband Space-frequency Beamforming using Time Delay Lines

The space-frequency beamforming is one of the most popular and effective structures for ultra wideband beamforming (UWB). In this paper, subband beamforming using tapped delay lines (TDLs), namely, TDLs-SB, is proposed for obtaining a satisfactory performance on ultra wideband passband. The TDL is originally used for space-time beamforming, however, the TDLSB is innovatively used TDLs for space-frequency beamforming with more degrees of freedom, resulting in perfect sidelobe characteristic and accurate beam pointing for ultra wideband signal. Simulations highlight the correctness and effectiveness of the proposed structure and algorithms for 1 GHz wideband passband, and the novel structure can process more than 1 GHz passband for beamforming.
