Novel Control Method With Five-Phase Interleaved Boost Converter to Reduce Power Pulsation in Dynamic Charging of Electric Vehicle

This paper proposes a novel control method with a five-phase interleaved boost converter to reduce power pulsation in the dynamic charging of electric vehicles. Dynamic charging is a technology that enables electric vehicles to be charged in motion. While the electric vehicle travels along the transmitter’s coils, the coupling coefficient between the receiver and transmitter’s coils is varied, as a result, power pulsation is generated. Power pulsation is a major drawback of the segmented coil in dynamic charging and as it damages the battery lifetime, addressing it should be on the agenda. A five-phase interleaved boost converter is added to the primary side to regulate the input voltage of dynamic charging to reduce power fluctuation at the battery side. An appropriate control method is proposed to control the five-phase interleaved boost converter which is simple and cost-effective as only comparators and logic gates are used. This paper examines the controller for different speeds such as 30 km/h and 60 km/h, which shows ±5% and ±12% power pulsation at the battery side respectively. As the speed is increased, the pulsation is sharper, but using this controller, the pulsation at high speed is not much compared to a lower speed.
