An Overview of Power Conversion Systems in Contemporary Grid-Interactive Efficient Buildings (GEBs)

Power conversion systems are critical enablers of grid-interactive efficient buildings (GEBs), which has been comprehensively reviewed in this paper. Different types of power conversions (AC-DC, DC-DC and AC-AC) are studied for GEB’s distribution system with respect to grid connection as well as for connection of distributed energy resources (DERs). Similarly, the various power conversion strategies adopted in GEBs are discussed for motor-drive applications in air-conditioning systems and next-generation electric vehicle (EV) chargers at parking facilities. Due to the failure prone nature of power converters, the modern condition monitoring methodologies and the advanced artificial intelligence (AI) based predictive maintenance techniques are also surveyed. Additionally, the concept of test-bedding, for validation of various power conversion techniques and control in GEBs, is reviewed.
