Topology Optimization of a Switched Reluctance Machine by Electromagnetic-Structural Multiphysics Finite Element Analysis

Vibration and acoustic noise caused by electromagnetic forces (EMFs) limit the application of switched reluctance machines (SRMs). In this article, the topology optimization (TO) is introduced to the rotor design of SRMs for reducing the stator vibration caused by resonance while retaining the output torque as possible. The TO freely forms the rotor to explore the potential best design. As the TO result, adopting the anchor-shaped rotor pole and opening a window inner the rotor pole are discovered as two tactics to mitigate stator resonance of the 12/8 SRM. With the aid of the two tactics, the resonance-induced displacement is reduced by 42% with a 5% average torque loss.
