Arterial Stiffness Index: Assessment of the Correlation with a Pulse Wave Velocity

Pulse wave velocity (PWV) is a sensitive indicator of arterial stiffness. The arterial stiffness index (ASI) can be easily obtained but is a less known marker of arterial stiffness. This paper describes the correlation observed between ASI and both aortic and «brachial-toe» PWVs, which were measured by oscillometric and photoplethysmography methods. In contrast to some studies, we have shown that there is a weak correlation between these parameters, which may be partly related to the complexity of the relationship between ASI and PWV.
