Design and Control of a 2kW Electric Vehicle Charger

An interleaved boost converter-based full bridge phase shift converter (PSFB) for charging an electric vehicle is illustrated in this paper. To attain a PF around unity at the AC input of supply, the suggested charger uses an interleaved boost converter as a front-ended device that runs in continuous conduction mode (CCM), and PSFB to process the battery charging of the EV. Almost all boost converters run at a fixed frequency with pulse width modulation (PWM), and the PSFB converter tries to maintain the power required by the battery. This paper gives a systematic and detailed design for a 2.0 kW prototype along with a controller design for the said converters, which is designed and validated with simulation using MATLAB/Simulink whose results show that at 100 kHz switching frequency, peak efficiency is 95%, THD is maintained to be less than 5% in variation from half load to full load, and PF is constant at 0.99 from 1950 W to 2.2 kW.
